Kaena Point is a 45-minute to one-hour boat ride from Waianae Harbor, necessitated by its inaccessibility from shore. The sloping shoreline drops off to 20 feet and levels out before dropping again to 45 feet. Black lava boulders are the building blocks of this site and are interlaced with a scattering of lava foundations and coral. The drop offs are undercut with overhangs, caverns and a profusion of Pukas - several large enough to hold a number of divers. Take a light to search around as many crustaceans seek refuge in the shallows, along with the multi-spotted crab and several types of shells. The normally rare leviathan cowry abounds here along with its large cousin the tiger. At the Point itself, the bottom drops off to 130 feet - and it is a good sight to look to the deeper water for passing travelers. Be careful - the current here can be extremely strong at times.
